Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the Images for All digitisation project at the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and lessons learned from it.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper describes the background to the project and collections held. It focuses on the development of the project web site, the digitisation of 100 images from the collection and the nature of project management in a small‐scale project.

Findings

There are many potential challenges faced by project managers working in small voluntary organisations, but these can be overcome.

Originality/value

This paper gives a direct insight into some of the challenges facing smaller organisations with limited full‐time staff and so reliant on volunteers, which are often overlooked.
