Abstract

Purpose

Based on a presentation at the 24th International Symposium on Economic Crime, September 2006, at the University of Cambridge, this paper aims to discuss the risks to business from organised crime.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on the author's experience as head of the Punjab police and from data gleaned from the Punjab police as well as other sources.

Findings

The paper shows that collusion exists between some parts of business and criminal groups and the ever present danger of terrorism.

Originality/value

The practical experience of the author shows that organized and economically motivated criminal enterprises target legitimate business in order to whitewash themselves into respectability.
