Abstract:
Lord Robbins's views expressed in a letter to The Times of Monday 14th December 1964 about the Government's decision not to make Teacher Training Colleges into independent Colleges of Education but to leave them under the LEAs and voluntary bodies have not had the attention they deserve. Naturally enough the previous debate centred mainly round the excellent record of the LEAs in teacher training, and the administrative advantages of letting them carry on with a job of which they had had long experience, particularly in the face of a critical period of rapid expansion of student numbers.
