Purpose - To show why leadership is a 'hot topic' and why leaders need to change.
Design/methodology/approach - Outlines changes in the business environment and the changes that leaders need to make in their behaviour.
Findings - Technology, global competition and higher employee expectations are all changing the role of the leader. Interdependence between businesses and individuals worldwide - and relationships with governments and other institutions - are also rapidly changing the leadership environment.
Practical implications - Leaders should set an inspiring mission which takes precedence over profit, compensate employees fairly and not seek huge compensation themselves, remove employee demotivators and obstructions (rather than motivate employees - there is a difference), be of service (sometimes literally serving customers) rather than self-aggrandizing, show a commitment to their company community (by supporting colleagues' diversity and sharing in their adversity), and make a commitment to employees' learning and sense of justice.
Originality/value - Demonstrates that leaders can survive only by adapting to changes in business practice.
