Universiti Teknologi MARA is top downloader of research

University receives award from international publisher for world’s highest usage of Emerald articles

Malaysia, April 2011 – Today the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) received an award from Emerald Group Publishing Limited, the world’s leading publisher of management research, for using more Emerald articles than any other of its 3000 university customers worldwide. In the last year, students from UiTM have downloaded over 870,000 articles from the publisher’s collection of research articles in business management and social sciences, securing the university’s top position as highest user for the second consecutive year.

Receiving the award on behalf of the University was Dato' Prof. Ir Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, Vice Chancellor. The award and certificate were presented by Moyna Keenan, Head of Corporate Communications from Emerald’s UK office, and Wan Yat Seng, Vice President/Regional Manager for Southeast Asia, Indochina, Korea & Japan who is based in Puchong, Selangor.
There has been particularly high usage of the publisher's articles in the following subjects; Marketing, Library & Information Studies, Information & Knowledge Management, and Accounting and Finance.

Dato' Prof. Ir Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said of the award "UiTM is very pleased to receive this award which demonstrates that our students have a thirst for knowledge and the latest research. It is particularly rewarding to know that students and staff at UiTM have sought more research from Emerald than other leading academic institutions and business schools."

All of the world's top 100 business schools subscribe to Emerald content, and authors from 98% of the top business schools write for Emerald journals.

Wan Yat Seng, adds: “We are delighted to be able to present UiTM for their high number of downloads, and we are indebted to the library staff who work hard to promote our collections through user training sessions. The rest of the world has a lot to learn from Malaysia when it comes to using our research, with two other Malaysian universities appearing in our top 20 biggest downloaders of research”.

UiTM has been an Emerald subscriber for the last five years. In May, the University will host a session in collaboration with Emerald to provide advice on how to get published to encourage researchers and students to write for academic journals.
