The Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire receives limited-edition copy of Little Diamonds of Bradford: A Jubilee Celebration

Bingley, 19 October 2012 – Dr Keith Howard, founder of academic publisher Emerald, today presented to the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, and Deputy Lieutenant, Roger Bowers, a limited-edition copy of the book commemorating the Little Diamonds of Bradford project. Emerald sponsored this local initiative, which encouraged school children in the Bradford District to create artworks as tributes to the Queen’s diamond jubilee, and subsequently produced and published the book Little Diamonds of Bradford: A Jubilee Celebration.

The organisers of the Little Diamonds of Bradford project, Rehfan Khan and Nadeem Khan, were also among the guests at the publisher’s headquarters in Bingley and received their own copy of the book. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Dale Smith, who was unable to attend the event, is to be handed a copy for retention at the Town Hall.

Dr Roscoe expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the participating schoolchildren as she accepted her copy of the book.

Alluding to Emerald’s long standing tradition of championing local initiatives that present creative and educational merits, Dr Howard stressed the legacy of this particular project.

The Little Diamonds of Bradford project saw over 40 schools take part, involving hundreds of children in the creation of short stories, poetry, sculptures, collages, family trees, paintings and graphic art. All the winners were recognised during an Award Ceremony at St George’s Hall on 17 May.

Following this event, Emerald produced and published a 250-page book featuring the evolution of the project, the award ceremony and a selection of the works of art created by the children from all the schools who took part.  In total, 6 hardback copies were hand-crafted, bound and boxed in special silver-foiled fabric. 50 further softback copies were printed for all the participating schools.

One hardback copy of the book will be presented to the Queen’s Private Secretary at Buckingham Palace by Taslima Begum of Green Lane Primary School in Bradford, who won the best individual story category.
