In “The Balanced Scorecard: Comments on Balanced Scorecard Commentaries”, Professor Kaplan shares his views on three papers published as part of a special issue of Journal of Accounting & Organizational Change dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the Balanced Scorecard. In 1992, Robert Kaplan and David Norton published their seminal paper “The balanced scorecard – measures that drive performance” in Harvard Business Review.
Professor Kaplan comments, “I am pleased and honoured that the editor of Journal of Accounting & Organization Change chose to recognize the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in the Harvard Business Review in 1992. Much academic work remains to be done to understand the practical and theoretical implications of the BSC innovation and hope other academics will continue to participate in this research agenda.”
The Special Issue is Volume 8, Number 4 of Journal of Accounting & Organizational Change, published by Emerald Group Publishing and edited by Zahirul Hoque, Professor of Accounting at La Trobe business school, Australia, who comments: “This special issue will give the reader a broad résumé of issues at the forefront of balanced scorecard practices and academic research around the globe.”
Emerald plays an indispensable role in linking research and practice, to the benefit of society. To celebrate this milestone of the Balanced Scorecard at 20, Emerald has also assembled the ten most highly cited papers on the subject from its extensive management collection.
