Emerald research explores facts and fiction in health and social care

Can singing in a choir help to treat mental health problems? Are men more depressed than women? Are children less happy than they were?

United Kingdom, February 2013 –  In a feature entitled “Fact… or Fiction?” Emerald Group Publishing explores health and social care research and demonstrates how it can make a social impact and serve to inform policy and practice. In total, eight articles have been selected for their relevance to a specific topic, including autism, domestic violence, mental health and general well-being. They are in free online access until the end of March 2013: www.emeraldinsight.com/promo/factorfiction.htm

The eight articles, published in such key titles as Journal of Health Organization and Management, Tizard Learning Disability Review, Journal of Adult Protection and Journal of Children’s Services, have been selected to draw attention to the vital research that supports the delivery of practice in health and social care settings. Covering intellectual disabilities, vulnerable groups, criminology, psychology, mental health and healthcare management, each article addresses a specific health care issue and suggests improvement for practice.

For instance, it is a FACT that singing in a choir can help those with mental health problems. The study, published in Journal of Public Mental Health, examines a cross-national sample which found that choral singing could be used to treat mental illness, suggesting that singing benefits social, emotional, physical and cognitive behaviour.

These articles are all taken from Emerald's Health & Social Care collection of journals, which covers research, management and practice in health and social care and allied areas. For more information, visit www.emeraldinsight.com/products/collections/hsc.htm
