Abstract

Purpose

Explains how organizations can adapt in order to foster a culture that cultivates great leaders.

Design/methodology/approach

Highlights how to manage from the front, and with conviction, to ensure that the team will follow.

Findings

Argues that effective leadership can only thrive when leaders are freed from bureaucracy and organizational process.

Practical implications

Urges companies to: cut the number of meetings and make them shorter to promote energy and focus; foster individual thought, talent and a sense of freedom to create; and avoid appointing “yes” men to management roles.

Social implications

Argues that shareholders can impede organizational success because they tend to want reliable, predicable behavior. Favors private companies, or those owned by their employees.

Originality/value

Contends that leaders must be free to “rock the boat”.
