Purpose – sets out the techniques that are involved in coaching and the skills that coaches need. Design/methodology/approach – reviews the ways in which coaching can be used. Advises on how to develop a coaching relationship with the person who is to be coached, and explains the different types of coaching relationship that can be developed. Sets out the different methods that are used within coaching and how to choose the method that is most suitable. Findings – underlines that coaching is not just a new training fad but has a long history. Argues that coaches need to know the techniques that have been developed over time if their coaching is to be effective.
