Abstract

Purpose

Explores whether companies perform best when they introduce diversity initiatives not simply to comply with the law, but to use people's different viewpoints, talents and experiences to improve decision‐making and problem solving.

Design/methodology/approach

Presents the results of a survey of more than 3,000,000 employees worldwide into diversity, employee satisfaction and organizational performance.

Findings

Shows that organizations that create an environment of inclusion can expect their business to be one that fosters innovation, creates a safer work environment, drives employee engagement, commitment and pride, sees a positive impact on customer satisfaction, and benefits in terms of financial performance.

Practical implications

Demonstrates that companies that want to benefit from an inclusive environment must actively manage those aspects of the workplace that directly affect key employee needs – equity, achievement and camaraderie.

Originality/value

Argues that US experience has revealed that excesses of quotas and targets can easily derail diversity initiatives, and the UK is headed this way unless organizations can identify and understand the real business benefits behind delivering diversity.
