Abstract

It should be plain to all how important a role the librarian plays within the organisation. The value of the information services should be clear. There is a need to concentrate on the impact and significance of the librarian's activities, in situations where there would be visible deficiencies without them. The identification of the organisation's concerns is essential, so that the service can be constantly measured against them. Evaluation must be objective. Constant monitoring of activities can be used to develop awareness of trends in requirements, and changes should be quickly and correctly responded to. The librarian must be imaginative in developing resources that serve genuine needs rather than popular demand. Information should not just be supplied; there is an obligation to ensure that it is used properly. The assessment of value must be directed towards developing the significance of the library services to the user, so that they will be seen as a worthy investment. Much that is currently done may be questioned and rejected. Information is vital to any organisation. It is the librarian's duty to ensure that its provision leads to growth and added value.
