Abstract

Tells the personal story of one individual′s journey in trying to understand how she is situated in the world relative to others, what she has absorbed (often unconsciously) about those who are different from her in some societally defined way, and how her Whiteness has both framed and limited how she sees, thinks about and acts towards herself and others. Recounts some experiences as a White faculty member in a predominantly Black university, relates some of what has been learned from them, and how this learning has contributed to a significant reshaping of thought, concerning teaching and learning, and thus how she thinks about “making a difference”
