Plascoat believes its performance polymer alloy (PPA) thick film coatings have the performance to become standard finishes in the electrical cable tray manufacturing sector.

That belief has been reinforced by the securing of a major order for the Au Tam Mei water treatment plant in Hong Kong, and specification for the Shek Wu Hui sewage treatment site with other orders from the region in the pipeline.

The Au Tam Mei order, secured by local agent Universal Channels, is seen as a breakthrough because of a range of environmental conditions that put the coating to the ultimate corrosion protection test. They include high humidity and UV levels and a coastal location experiencing constant salt attack.

The greater insulation properties claimed of the thick film PPA coating, fluidised bed dipped to 250 microns over the galvanised mild steel cable trays, was another factor in the Chinese decision to turn away from paint, PVC or duplex coating systems.

Other considerations included the halogen-free nature of the PPAs and low toxicity and smoke levels in the event of fire, reportedly proven in both comprehensive in-house and independent, specialist trials. Excellent edge coverage claimed of the perforated sections was also seen as vital for overall durabilty and low cost of ownership, with the facility for coverage of less than perfect welds and simple re-covering of sections offering reduced reject rates and contributing to a further improved bottom line.

The Plascoat PPA being applied in Hong Kong meets BS 476 (Part 7) Class 1 and provides good long-term adhesion, although applied to the cleaned steel in a single shot, without the need for a primer. The coating's other properties are claimed to include excellent resistance to pollutants, chemicals, impact and abrasion damage.
