Futura Coatings announces the availability of its Geothane®, a series of spray-applied, seamless, elastomeric containment linings that, according to the company's spokesman Dan McBride, bridge hairline cracks in the concrete tank substrate and resist the effects of corrosion on steel and concrete surfaces; two common problems in waste water treatment facilities (Plate 1). The lining is available in both polyurethane and polyurea formulations to help expand the window of application in order for lining projects to proceed more quickly and efficiently.

"Geothane is engineered to be a diverse product", commented Mr McBride. "Due to its polyurethane/polyurea chemistry, the product can be used on a variety of substrates and in a variety of environmental conditions", he added. This means it is available as a lining for steel and concrete process tanks on waste water treatment facilities and many other applications exposed to harsh conditions.

"Even high humidity or hidden moisture in concrete has minimal effect on some of these products", said Mr McBride. This is believed to be due to the polyurea chemistry of the product that allows these elastomers to be tolerant to moisture during application to properly prepared surfaces. This built-in ability to resist the intrusion of moisture into the coating and an extremely rapid cure time is said to eliminate downtime of existing installations. It also shortens start-up time of new installations.

According to the manufacturers, when applied, Geothane forms a seamless, self-flashing barrier against corrosion due to harsh chemicals or UV degradation. Plus, formulations of the product can be used in a variety of different climates from arctic cold to tropical heat. It is also stated that once cured, it resists thermal shock and cracking down to -50°F (-45°C).

The products are available as 100 per cent solids, zero VOC polyurea/polyurethane elastomeric membranes for primary and secondary containment applications. Product versions are available in black, tan and gray colours. There is also a fire retardant system that is said to be self-extinguishing in accordance with ASTM D-635.
