ASTM announces round robins, new standards activities

ASTM International, West Conshohocken, PA, has launched several activities related to the coatings technology industry.

Subcommittee E 12.14 on “Multi-Dimensional Characterization of Appearance,” part of Committee E 12 on Color and Appearance is tackling the problems involved in instrumental measurements of the appearance of high-quality surfaces. Directness of image (DoI) is valued and easily discriminated visually, but hard to achieve and difficult to measure instrumentally. All interested are invited to join their current efforts in obtaining instrumental and visual data through a series of round-robin experiments. Subcommittee E 12.06, part of E 12 on Color and Appearance, has undergone a change of both its title and scope. Earlier known as Appearance of Displays, it is currently called “Image-Based Color Measurements”. The new scope is to create standards that prescribe the measurement characterization, calibration, and methodologies of digital color devices. The opportunities arising from digital imaging technology are creating needs for quantification and measurement of color and color appearance phenomenon. ASTM Committee G 02 on Wear and Erosion is gauging interest in a new set of standards for measuring the adhesion of coatings and thin films using a single-point scratch method. This activity will be conducted under Subcommittee G 02.30 on Abrasive Wear, but work will be coordinated with Committee C 28 on Advanced Ceramics. The new standard will enable users of the scratch adhesion test to make standardized measurements of coating adhesion and to be able to quote results in a standardized format. Finally, Subcommittee G 03.01 on Joint Weathering Projects has reformed Task Group G 03.01.05 on Compliance Issues. While there are no plans to develop a standard, the subcommittee, which is part of Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability, welcomes any interested parties to participate in the work of the reformed task group. The goals of the reformed task group include: define the use of tolerances and operational fluctuations in weathering standards, harmonize the expression of tolerances/operational fluctuations in weathering standards, consider if measurement uncertainty applies to weathering standards, and consider the feasibility of mapping test conditions in weathering instruments.
