Hexavalent chromium health fact sheet available from OSHA

OSHA's new fact sheet about hexavalent chromium details preventative measures to reduce its harmful effects, explains how employees may be exposed, and highlights some of the requirements of the final rule released on February 28, 2006. The fact sheet summarizes employer requirements for abiding by permissible exposure limits; providing proper PPE; employing good housekeeping and hygiene practices; prohibiting employee rotation as a means of achieving compliance; and providing respiratory protection and medical monitoring. The new final rule for hexavalent chromium sets the employee exposure limit at 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour time- weighted average.
