Coaching and mentoring standards to be unified

The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) has launched a consultation project as the first step in creating European standards for professional coaching and mentoring practice.

A considerable variety of coaching and mentoring frameworks, codes of practice and standards currentlyexists within the industry, including the Academy of Executive Coaching's academy-information document, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy's accreditation, Clutterbuck Associates' mentoring-programme standards and the European Mentoring Centre's accredited-mentoring certification programme. They vary considerably in quality, scope and level of adoption.

The unified standards framework will be used as a benchmark and will also be independent of the commercial interests of any one group. The framework will have a major impact on whether the industry should be regulated and will help clients to understand fully the services on offer from providers of coaching and mentoring.
