Abstract

Notes that the retail industry sector is currently undergoing major changes resulting from factors such as increased competition and tighter profit margins. Suggests that integrated management through the extended supply chain is the most effective means to achieve good value provision to the end consumer. Looks at factors such as efficient consumer response ‐ an initiative launched in the USA to bring together grocery distributors and their suppliers. Also considers initiatives such as quick response ‐ a current UK practice which encourages the effective management of the supply chain. Features the practices of key operators such as Safeway. Proposes a model for effective partnerships and suggests initiatives for future success.
