Abstract

This short report concerns two recent regional prison health conferences for German speaking nations. Most international conferences use English as the common language. Unfortunately, language barriers do exist and regional conferences are important because they provide an opportunity to bring people, both those working in the field and policy makers, who share the same language, together. In many European countries such conferences are already in existence, for example, in Italy, France and Spain. For German speaking countries the first two conferences on health promotion in prisons were organised in 2004 in Bonn, Germany (www.wiad.de) and in 2006 in Vienna, Austria. The conferences were jointly organised by the Scientific Institute of the German Medical Association (WIAD), German AIDS Support (DAH,) and the University of Bremen (Institute for Drug Research). There were over 150 experts from four countries from either prison or community health care services who attended each conference.
