Abstract

The arguments in favour of the merger of university libraries with computer centres are considered. The research, institutional and information environments and their trends, which lead to such mergers, are discussed. The published literature and progress to date are reviewed, revealing that North American universities have progressed much further in this field than have universities in the United Kingdom.
