Abstract

Molybdenum disulphide dispersions in mineral oil have long been known to be good anti‐wear and anti‐friction lubricant additives. This study compares the friction and wear behaviour of two well‐known commercial MoS2 in oil dispersions using a four‐ball wear test machine. The two MoS2 dispersions were added to eight different commercial motor oils and their friction and wear characteristics are evaluated using a four‐ball friction and wear test procedure. Each of the base oils used was selected to represent a specific segment of motor oils, and none was selected because of any known compatibility with either of the two dispersions in this study.
