Nanotechnology uncertainty: The need for responsible development
Abstract
Purpose
Explores the use of nanoscience and nanotechnologies and the potential benefits for many areas of research and application,
Design/methodology/approach
A study and subsequent report commissioned by the UK Government in 2003 which identifies a range of potential benefits to be gained from specific nanoscience and nanotechnology applications.
Findings
Confirms that nanotechnologies clearly offer exciting possibilities that could benefit society as a whole. But, what is now needed is research in areas of uncertainty and appropriate regulation to ensure that nanotechnologies develop in a safe and socially acceptable way.
Originality/value
Nanoscience and nanotechnologies are now widely seen as having huge potential to bring benefits to many areas of research and application, and are attracting rapidly increasing investments from Governments and from businesses in many parts of the world.
