Abstract

Examines varying degrees of influence on lighting specification by facilities managers. Argues that facilities managers are ideally placed to weigh life‐cycle costs against capital purchase costs and make informed specification choices. Discusses the features and benefits of the latest lamp technology and high frequency gears which offer improved performance and reduced energy consumption and therefore long‐term savings. Contains quotations from (anonymous) practising facilities managers on their experience with lighting specification in different environments. Provides calculated examples to support the argument. Argues that facilities managers should assume the role of educator to the rest of the management team.
