Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and operation of the SINTO inter‐library loan service, one of the longest‐running schemes in existence in the UK.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is descriptive.

Findings

It was found that document supply via SINTO is declining and the reasons for this are identified.

Originality/value

The role of document supply and access agreements in the context of a national information policy are explored.
