Abstract

Extensible Markup Language (XML) enables machines to understand each other via the Web as well as human beings. Archives, libraries and museums are likely to want to make use of XML for offering their catalogues and finding aids as well as digital resources themselves. The two‐year collaborative Contemporary Culture Virtual Archive in XML (COVAX) project is being funded by the European Commission to investigate the suitability of XML for this purpose and to build a working cultural gateway.
