Online learning systems: highlights of the TechCast project
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe a line of research for developing “online learning/research systems”.
Design/methodology/approach
To illustrate this approach, the paper describes a research project that pools the knowledge of 100 experts working online to forecast breakthroughs in all fields of technology.
Findings
The paper finds that online learning/research systems offer great advantages for pooling the tacit knowledge residing throughout organizations.
Research limitations/implications
Formal research studies could be used to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks quantitatively.
Practical implications
Most organizations do not have access to their members' knowledge, so online learning systems would be helpful in making informed forecasts, evaluating strategies, and reaching decisions.
Originality/value
The paper provides a powerful innovation for improving knowledge.
