Abstract

Purpose

To celebrate the enhanced role collections has in libraries, to promote and build user communities and the challenges they present with a range of new digital formats. To recap trends in collection development including some predictions for the immediate future.

Design/methodology/approach

Anecdotal and theory are incorporated to demonstrate how collections have migrated from a ownership and proprietorship investment into a service model.

Findings

Technology is driving some of the decisions and activities in user, collection and service centered libraries regarding the role collections have.

Originality/value

This paper is useful for information management professionals who seek greater understanding of the RSS feeds, uses in libraries and how to get started.
