Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the part that managing skill sets plays in practicing the performance standard of managing people effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is to differentiate between organizing staff positions around job functions and organizing staff positions around the skills that individuals bring to the positions.

Findings

The findings are that individuals are more productive when they have the chance to use their unique skill sets rather than having to do tasks for which they have little or no skills simply because those tasks are part of a larger function.

Originality/value

The value is in learning how to advance organizational goals through effective use of employee skill sets.
