Whilst it is true to say that records management principles and associated disciplines are transferable across most organisations there are a number of unique challenges within the global financial services sector. Consequently, I was pleased to hear that a book, dedicated to this sector, was being published.
The book has been edited by a team of people who have first hand experience of the academic, legal and practical challenges of records management within the global financial services sector. Their collective experience has resulted in the publication of a book which gives appropriate advice and guidance in dealing with strategic, legal and operational matters.
In writing this book the authors have included material which explains the functions of capital and the products and services of the financial institutions. This will help some readers attain a better understanding of the context of the numerous legal and regulatory requirements other readers may consider this detail superfluous.
Extraterritorial issues and the challenges of differing data protection regulations are discussed. A good working knowledge of these is essential for records managers working in this profession. Other chapters deal with policy, risk‐based approaches, litigation and outsourcing to name a few.
To summarise, this is a very useful book to have for reference. It is a valuable tool for the novice and professional/experienced records manager alike. I hope the editors will consider further, related, publications dealing with legal/regulatory matters in more detail.
