Abstract

This article reflects on the changes which have occurred in the 1980s in the chilled and frozen food market in the UK, and projects likely trends for the 1990s. The impact of such changes on storage and distribution companies is addressed. It is anticipated that cold stores will have a more transit‐role rather than a stockholding function with European harmonisation in 1992. Reduction in stocks will lead to surplus capacity and, in some cases, the selling of sites. To compete, companies will have to invest in new technology and training programmes.
