Abstract

Purpose

To provide experience‐based reflections on building, sustaining and leading a successful international travel business.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach of the paper is based on an interview with the co‐founder and executive chairman of Flight Centre Limited.

Findings

The paper contains practical insights on how to build and sustain a business with illustrations drawn from Flight Centre Limited in relation to business focus, systems, procedures, human resources, motivating and incentivizing people, learning at work and developing an internal vehicle for work‐based learning.

Originality/value

The viewpoint contains candid and insightful reflections on how to run an international business from one of Australia's most successful entrepreneurs talking about Australia's largest travel business.
