The coming conflict between science and spirit

Abstract

This review of a fine book on recent advances in neuroscience shows that the field has successfully demonstrated the use of game theory and probability to model animal behavior. However, science may be claiming too much by contending that this approach explains away consciousness, will, and other qualities attributed to mind and spirit. A balanced assessment of evidence on both sides of this historic debate shows that it is impossible to resolve this issue now, but the results of this great social experiment can be expected by about 2020 when computer power matches the brain.
