The decision to trust boosts performance
Abstract
Purpose
Futurice is an international software design and development house that has grown from three to 150 people in 12 years. In the middle of the growth, people who earlier made perfectly rational and clever decisions independently started suddenly to make bad and unjustifiable decisions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the company strategy to improve decision making and overall performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper looks at how the company responded by making all company information completely transparent to all its staff. All employees were recommended to make decisions concerning themselves and the work environment. Futurice became very active in fostering a sense of caring. The company also started actively to develop company strategy, vision, mission and short‐term goals with its employees.
Findings
The paper reveals that the chosen way has been successful. Futurice has been growing quickly in all its European offices and yet it is very profitable. People rarely leave the organization and customer satisfaction is also high.
Originality/value
This case study gives HR professionals looking to improve employee decision making an example of a successful strategy.
