Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to explore the issue of “happiness” as a meaningful concept in organizational life.

Design/methodology/approach

The article is based on published studies in the field of happiness.

Findings

The article finds that the concept of happiness is too narrow to be valuable to learning and development professionals.

Practical implications

The article has a practical application in that learning and development professionals can examine their own practice in the light of the wider issues that the debate about happiness raises.

Originality/value

The article raises important issues for learning and development professionals about their role.
