Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to compare interaction with instruction within a learning environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The article reports findings of interviews with nine managers from the University of Ottawa, who had all undergone training.

Findings

There is interest in the effectiveness or otherwise of a management leadership program, and it is concluded that though the training brings clear benefits, these benefits came not from the specific course content but from the opportunity to meet colleagues and engage them in conversation about work related matters.

Originality/value

The paper provides useful information on learning methods.
