Thanks to the contributions of the editorial team, editorial advisory board members, and the hundreds of dedicated reviewers, Career Development International is increasingly recognized as a high-quality journal. Although it has just been a year since we received our first impact factor of 1.014, the number of submissions has increased significantly and we have become more selective. The impact factor along with the “EarlyCite” functionality offered through the ScholarOne’s Manuscript Central system positions CDI quite well to grow in both reputation and prestige. Our request to be assigned to Grade Three in the European Academic Journal Group List is under consideration. Such a reassignment is merited and will tremendously benefit our European colleagues, authors, and reviewers most affected by this European grading system.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Nikos Bozionelos (Audencia Nantes, Ecole de Management, France) for his decade long service as an Associate Editor of the journal. Although he is stepping down as Associate Editor, he will continue to support the journal in the roles of an editorial advisory board member, reviewer, and author. I extend a warm welcome to our newest Associate Editor, Professor Akram Al Ariss (Toulouse Business School, France), an expert on qualitative research methodologies. I will be remiss if I do not publicly thank the many contributions of the journal’s continuing Associate Editors Professors Tom Stone (Oklahoma State University, USA), Julia Richardson (York University, Canada), and Bert Schreurs (Maastricht University, The Netherlands). These colleagues deserve our thanks and admiration for their dedication to providing high-quality and constructive feedback to potential contributors. I am also very appreciative of the support of the Emerald team consisting of Zoe Sanders, Samantha Thompson, and Katie Spike and the crew that works behind the scenes to maintain a successful journal.

The scope of CDI encompasses mainstream career research as well as research addressing topics in the broad areas of human resource management and organizational behavior that have implications for careers and managing careers. CDI publishes theoretical papers, review articles offering new insights and research directions, qualitative and quantitative studies, and special issues on topics dealing with important issues, concerns and emerging trends. Prospective authors are encouraged to contact us with their ideas for special issues. Potential authors are encouraged to visit the journal’s homepage to peruse previous issues of the journal and learn about the submission process.

I am pleased that the number of submissions continues to increase and the acceptance rate decrease. These changes have resulted in publication of high quality articles employing sound and sophisticated methodologies. Descriptive research and research investigating simple bivariate relationships are unlikely to be published and research reporting tests of mediation with cross-sectional data is viewed less favorably unless strong theoretical rationale is articulated for expecting mediation. Indeed, the prestige of CDI is on the rise as evidenced by the impact factor, the quality of manuscripts published, and the reputation of well-known scholars who routinely consider CDI as a potential outlet for their research. We fully expect this positive trend to continue.

As I begin my seventh year, I am very much cognizant of the fact that leading a journal is a collective effort and I am grateful for the support of the Emerald team and my professional colleagues, from authors to reviewers to readers. I am confident you will enjoy reading our first issue of 2014. It is truly an eclectic collection of high-quality articles. I know that CDI will have another great year!
