Abstract

Important developments in the hospitality industry in the 1980s are reviewed and their implications for the 1990s discussed. It is proposed that social and demographic changes will continue to produce a great influence on the demand for hospitality services. Continued success in the 1990s will depend on effective response to changes in the marketplace. In particular, it is foreseen that European firms are likely to expand in the early 1990s as they compete in the Single European Market; and there will also be more opportunities on a global scale, particularly in areas such as the Asia Pacific region.
