Abstract

In the light of the recent political upheaval in Eastern Europe a comparison is made between the types of economic and political union to be found in the USSR and those at present being proposed for the member states of the European Community. The concept is taken further by envisaging the possible outcome if the USSR split up entirely into politically independent states where each could proceed towards the next stage of economic union. More realistically, it is envisaged that instead of a totally United Europe there will be some natural distancing of states from central control and a desire to retain a measure of political and economic independence.
