Abstract

Discusses the effects of single sourcing on the buyer. Explains the rationale behind Dr. Deming′s assertion to end the practice of awarding business on price tag alone, but instead, to work with a single supplier to reduce variation. Looks at the implications and challenges it presents to the buyer. Asserts that single sourcing is one of the key concepts which forms the cornerstone of Japanese economic success. Contends that motivations are quality improvement and cost reduction. Concludes that the aim is not to have a single supplier but to reduce variation.
