Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Manufacturing firms try to maintain a scale of economy, whereby there is a productivity ratio of output to input – maximizing output and reducing production costs. A drop in demand can lead to increased value of production costs, and thus scale inefficiency. To compensate, firms use mass production systems as well as lean manufacturing philosophies. Investing in research and development can increase innovation and technological changes which can increase productivity and competitiveness. Such changes need to be employed long-term and holistically for maximum effect.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.
