Apprentice’s career takes off with Airbus

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 46, Issue 3

A 20-year-old apprentice was in the world media spotlight at the launch of the Airbus A350 aircraft that he helped to build.

Hal Willis, an apprentice aeronautical engineer at the company’s Filton base, near Bristol, UK, gathered with colleagues to watch a live transmission of the passenger jet’s maiden test flight.

"It has been a lot of work but it is worthwhile when you see something like this today; it’s fantastic," he told BBC News.

He is one of 14 members of the Industry Apprentice Council (IAC) that was launched at a House of Commons reception. The IAC, which involves the specialist awarding organization for industry qualifications EAL, aims to give a voice to the new generation of talented young people who have embarked on a vocational path to a rewarding career in industry.

Ann Watson, EAL managing director, said: "Hal has played a pivotal role in establishing the IAC, which speaks volumes for his passion and commitment to giving young apprentices a voice. He is a terrific role model for those thinking about a career in industry. He should be immensely proud to have a hand in building such an extraordinary aircraft."
