International shows and conferences of textile science and technology

Textile research and innovation, manufacturing processes, textile machinery and products are being promoted around the globe by numerous shows and conferences. The activity is certainly on the increase with several events every month between now and the end of the year.

It would be difficult to include all textile events because textiles are important for almost every other discipline, but I will try to highlight most of the activities with an admittance of sympathy for those events that I may omit, though not deliberately, from this discussion.

April is very busy with two exhibitions: one in technical textiles held in Brazil and another in textiles and clothing focusing on fabrics in Vietnam. In the same month in USA the nonwovens community is organizing a conference on fabric property development and characterization. I think two points should be highlighted when considering the above: that the textile discipline is terribly important for the world economy and that technical textiles continue to dominate the world seen. Of course there are academic, smaller conferences, seminars and other more local events, not listed here. I think we should start converging technical textiles with traditional textiles and we should also try to interface more with design. We can certainly be more effective and more forward looking if we bring down any barriers, but I am optimistic because in some academic groups this has already been achieved.
