This issue of the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology presents selected papers from the sixth International Technical Textiles Congress (ITTC) which was held on October 14-16 2015 in Izmir and organised by the Department of Textile Engineering, Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir, Turkey.

Technical textiles rank among the most innovative sectors of technical materials with one of the highest growth potential among the leading five high-tech industries. Textiles are being increasingly used in fields such as construction, safety, medicine and environmental protection.

The ITTC, which has been held in Turkey periodically since 2002, aims to provide a platform for networking to researchers and companies from all over the world who are working on technical textiles, high performance and SMART textile materials and products, and to also provide new opportunities for investing.

During the sixth ITTC 2015, a total of 68 oral and 27 poster presentations took place in the following topics:

  • functional fibres;

  • nano technical textiles;

  • medical textiles;

  • protective clothing;

  • military textiles;

  • filtration textiles;

  • composite materials;

  • smart and interactive textiles;

  • packaging textiles;

  • automotive textiles;

  • sports textiles;

  • agricultural textiles;

  • civil engineering, construction textiles, and geotextiles;

  • applied design;

  • textile ecology; and

  • textile marketing and investment.

On behalf of the scientific and organising committees of the sixth ITTC 2015, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the editor and the editorial board of the International Journal of Science and Technology for the opportunity to publish these selected papers from the Congress and in this way to further promote and disseminate the results of this Congress for the ultimate benefit of the textile community.
