A response to Joan Rué's comments on Wai Ming Cheung and Wing Yee Wong's article “Does lesson study work?” in Vol. 3 No. 2, 2014

Joan Rué clearly realized the contributions of lesson study and learning study on teaching improvement and student learning. Given a professional dialogue with Joan Rué here, we open the discussion of how learning assessment should be considered in classroom-based research projects. We hope that this study would contribute to the improvement of the traditional separation between academia and the professions. We also hope to have a further discussion with Joan Rué on the extension of lesson study by the learning theory of variation which could explain the effects of teachers’ actions on student learning in a useful way that brings together the “what” of curriculum and the “how” of pedagogy.
