Readers of the journal may have noticed that a new editorial board has been appointed. With effect from January 2024, the journal is edited by myself, Axel Kaehne, with the help of my colleagues, Dr Julie Feather in the role of associate editor and Dr Minna Kaarakainen as editorial assistant. I am delighted to have this strong editorial team in place to address the challenges a high-impact journal like ours brings.

The journal’s prominent position in the field of health organization and management is due to the fantastic work by the previous editors, and I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful work of my colleagues, Professor Helen Dickinson and her team. We would not be where we are right now without her relentless efforts to increase the impact, visibility and profile of the journal in the field over the last decade.

As we are looking ahead, the journal is facing a perfect storm, which we need to be aware of. The world of academic publishing is changing fast, and we need to ensure that the journal remains ready to embrace the new challenges coming our way. First, there is the move to electronic and open-access publishing, which will increasingly change the way in which authors would like to see their papers accessed across the world to a global readership. Second, however, as a journal with international impact, we are seeing an enormous increase in submissions from countries across the world, a fact that we will need to reflect on in our editorial board and the strategic work we are doing.

Last but not least, the world of artificial intelligence carries promise and perils for any academic journal. We will need to respond to this robustly whilst, at the same time, embracing the opportunities it brings. To start, we have just announced a call for papers for a special issue on AI in health organization and management. You can find the call here.

In sum, the journal will need to be a place for innovative research from across the world, whilst maintaining its highest standard of academic rigour in a rapidly changing publishing world. The editorial team is excited to have you, the readers, and a strong editorial board on its side to embrace this new and brave future.
