A range of precision mechanisms designed for automated production procedures are so sophisticated that they have even been used for the manufacture of intricate jewellery, utilising precious metals and stones. Such mechanisms are manufactured by MTA Automation AG, and available in the UK from Machine Building Systems Ltd (Plate 2).

The components are designed for modular assembly, with slides, grippers and rotary units being combined to provide a very wide range of production units, suitable for assembly and machining operations. The equipment also has standard 40mm fixing hole centres, compatible with the mounting profiles also available in the Machine Building Systems range. This compatibility and integrated modular construction virtually eliminates the need for special interfaces, which can prove to be necessary but expensive additions to less sophisticated systems.

The MTA range features precision engineering and manufacture utilising ultra-fine ball bushes which results in high-speed transfers coupled with long-term operation and reliable positional repeatability. Hardened precision stop screws also guarantee accurate sequence control switching despite being subject to numerous set or reset operations.

Pneumatically-operated linear transfer arms, rotary units and grippers, together with slides which include a rodless cylinder version, can all be supplied. Motorised slides in three stroke options are also available, together with shock absorbers and stop screws incorporating integrated sensors with diodes and connectors. Slide mounting brackets which provide rigidity and operational accuracy are also included in the range.
