Sika's new designers guide highlights the technical aspects of elastic bonding

Keyword: Adhesives

A new design guide has been published by Sika for those involved in the calculation and stress analysis aspects of product design.

Compiled specifically for design engineers, seeking new methods of fastening together similar, or dissimilar materials, while eliminating problems and adding benefits, Sika's new 70-page hard backed technical pocket book on Elastic Bonding will prove a boon (see Plate 1).

Highlighting the basic principles of adhesive technology, and its cost-effective use in industry, Sika's hard backed A6 pocket book will be invaluable to designers and engineers in all aspects of vehicle, domestic appliance, marine and manufacturing industries, particularly where jointing materials together is restrictive to product design.

In the first major chapter of Sika's Elastic Bonding "mini bible" the authors compare the advantages of elastic bonding techniques with a wide range of rigid fastening techniques and explain the basic elements of adhesive joint design, including the use of computers in strength calculations.

Pointing out that, since its introduction in 1980, elastic bonding has become standard for certain processes in the automotive industry, Sika's technical pocket book underlines the advantages, such as bonding in windscreens, where its use has made a considerable contribution to train, bus, coach, lorry and car design.

Providing a detailed guide to adhesive technology in modern industrial practice, the following nine chapters of Sika's technical pocket book explain how to select the right adhesive, methods of disassembly and repairs, quality assurance, long-term serviceability, and environmental safeguards.

Explaining the difference in stress distribution of various joint assemblies, the book utilises photoelastic models to illustrate the stress patterns which show the stress behaviour of bolted section, thin layer rigid adhesive and elastic adhesive bond.

Illustrated with full colour graphics, Sika's technical booklet provides sample calculations to assist the designer as well as explaining the technology behind one- and two-part systems and booster accelerators. Complementary books covering the practical aspects of bonding are also available.

Now recognised as a key technology, which opens up new possibilities in industrial manufacturing, elastic bonding will find increasing use in production line manufacture where the elastic bonding of pre-finished products will bring further saving time and cost savings.
