DeviceNet control system compared

Keywords Fieldbus, DeviceNet

The 280 members of the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) are committed to producing products that reduce installation and maintenance cost, enable advanced diagnostic and communication features, but do not impose unreasonable restrictions on the engineer's choice of the right equipment for the job. Each year the number of members grows by 50 per cent which makes DeviceNet one of the fastest growing fieldbus organisations in the world. The photographs show why control system designers choose DeviceNet to simplify their control panels and reduce installation and maintenance costs.

Take two beverage packaging lines. Design and build one using conventional hard wired input and output devices (Plate 1). Design and build the second using a "state of the art" DeviceNet communications network (Plate 2).

Plate 1 The control panel from packaging line number 1 using conventional hard wired input and output devices

Plate 2 The control panel from packaging line number 2 shows how much simplification is possible when a DeviceNet communication network is used

Even with an additional variable speed drive and extra PLC hardware on the second line, these panels at Rhode Island Beverage Packaging show that DeviceNet can bring valuable practical benefits, in this example:

  • reducing major parts count by 20 per cent;

  • eliminating many electromagnetic devices;

  • dramatically reducing the quantity of input/output terminals and associated wiring;

  • improving free space in the panel allowing logical equipment layout, improved access for maintenance and efficient power devices cooling.

Which production line would you rather be responsible for maintaining?
