Pneumatics for new self-contained mini production line

Keywords Assembly, Pneumatics

Parker Pneumatic 3D® automation products, actuators and valve islands have been specified for a new programmable self-contained mini production line - the Picomatic AT - developed by Ipswich based robotic and special purpose machine builder, Anglian Automation, to provide high volume product manufacturers with a compact, efficient and cost-effective automated solution to small parts assembly (Plate 4).

The Picomatic AT is ergonomically designed for single operator use and provides versatile performance to meet "just-in-time" needs. Independent programmable servo-controlled motors power the fixture and storage unit dial plates, giving precise fixture index movement and reducing assembly motion by encouraging the operator to work in a smooth efficient rhythm. A mini-controller with back light display and key-pad provides logic to the dial tables and the simultaneous time saving automatic peripheral equipment for functions such as dosing, pressing, punching, piercing, screwing, testing and off-loading.

The first installation of a Picomatic AT is for the assembly of solenoids - each comprising nine separate components - for hydraulic valves. A single operator is now able to deliver throughput previously undertaken by two operators per shift over a three shift day!

For the automatic peripheral functions, Anglian Automation chose Parker Pneumatic's range of 3D® precision automation system components to enable pick-and-place, load and unload, or move and manipulate operations in any dimension. They are widely used as a means of manipulation and transportation of work pieces to machining stations.

The flexibility and modularity of the Parker Hannifin 3D® range enables Anglian Automation to modify the peripheral functions on the Picomatic AT to suit the components being assembled.

Typical applications are assembly operations, materials handling, machine loading and unloading, transfer systems and component positioning. The 3D® range includes carrier units, linear units, short stroke units, base and wrist rotates and grippers, and vacuum products.
